Turtle Pet

Finding the perfect pet can be a challenge, but once you decide on a turtle finding the perfect turtle pet might be the easiest thing you do.

Having a turtle pet is an ideal solution for most people.  There is no pet noise, very little mess and no walks are needed when you have a turtle as a pet, which is great for apartment dwellers that have neighbors in close proximity.  Indeed, for those who live in apartments where dogs and cats are prohibited, a turtle pet may be the only pet option available.

One important thing to note when you decide to take on a turtle pet is that you are making a long term commitment.  Turtles can, as a general rule, live for 50 to 80 years; in other words, your pet could be with you for life.  You will need to consider that fact before making the decision, as there are long term effects as well.  What will you do for care of your turtle pet when you are on vacation?  It will still need to be fed on a daily basis, and have its environment cleaned and maintained.

Health of the turtle pet owner is also a consideration.  Turtles can be detrimental to the owner’s health as they do carry the salmonella bacteria.  This bacterium causes an intestinal tract infection in humans, resulting in bouts of diarrhea, cramps, fever and vomiting.  If gone untreated, it could have catastrophic consequences.  Thorough hand washing after each contact with your turtle pet or any feature in its environment is strongly recommended to avoid contracting this uncomfortable and potentially harmful bacterium.  If your household includes very young children, under 5 years old, it is generally recommended not to have a turtle pet.

That being said, having a turtle pet can be a great experience with the proper care of both the turtle and human safety.  Turtles actually have a health benefit for humans of which many are unaware.  Medical professionals have found that people who own fish or turtles enjoy a stress relieving effect when observing the pet environment.  There is something genuinely soothing and relaxing in watching your turtle pet swim in its water feature, or bask in the sun with its tiny head offered up in thanks for the warm rays.  Feeding and watching the turtle eat is satisfying as it fulfills a nurturing instinct within us.

Many people have discovered the wonderful experience of having a turtle pet, and enjoyed its calming effects on their lives.  Perhaps you are seeking a perfect pet for your lifestyle; why not make the decision to include a turtle in your life?  Making a long term commitment to a turtle pet may be the perfect choice for you.
