Turtle Care

Turtles are a popular pet among young people, and it is important to teach them proper turtle care in order for the turtle’s survival.  Finding the care tips they will need to know can be done through informational booklets and numerous sites on the Internet as well.

Before taking a turtle as a pet, first you should make sure that a turtle is the right pet for you.  If you are buying a turtle from a pet store, you can ask the store owner for tips on turtle care.  Maintaining the turtle’s well-being in the same manner as the store owner had been doing can only be beneficial for the pet, and certainly easier for the owner.  If the turtle was found on the side of the road somewhere, or in a pond, you will need to find out what type of turtle you’ve acquired to learn how to care for it.

The most popular types of turtles to have as pets are Red Eared Sliders, box turtles, mud turtles, and painted turtles.  Box turtles and mud turtles are land-dwelling creatures, while sliders and painted turtles require water as well as dry land.  These distinguishing features are important things to know about your turtle; care for them will start at building their habitats.

Basic turtle care is pretty easy.  When the turtle is first brought home, a proper home will need to be set up.  You will need to know what their natural habitat is like so that you can reproduce it as much as possible.  This will ensure that your pet will feel comfortable and do well in its new home.  The largest enclosed area will be best; after all, nature does not have walls.  An environment providing water, rocks, light, mud and, most important, temperature control is essential for your turtle care.

After establishing the turtle’s new home, food will be the next issue to address.  Turtles should not be fed table scraps.  Again, imitating their natural environment is important, and food in particular is a crucial point.  Knowing what type of turtle you have will determine the type of food it will need to sustain it.  Turtle food can be purchased in pet supply stores, in varieties to suit Aquatic Turtles or Tortoises, and carnivorous diets to herbivorous diets.  Since diet is the most crucial part of turtle care, take time to find the best diet for your pet turtle.

Turtle care also extends to health.  Handle your pet as little as possible.  Enjoy them visually; watch the turtle swim, bask in the light, move around in its habitat and eat.  Doing so will bring joy and happiness to the owner, and to the turtle as well.
